Universiti Teknologi Mara – World Class?

When I study issues or events to write about, I try to look for the bloggability factor. I can only say that when I saw and read the advertisement placed by Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) in the New Straits Times (NST) yesterday, it will be an absolute travesty if I don't stick my nosey-self into it.

But before I get into the full swing of things, let me just clarify that I have absolutely nothing against UiTM students (although they rarely end up on my shortlist of candidates for interviews). I am certain that there are exceptional UiTM students out there who have achieved great success with the careers. I'm also not disputing the fact that UiTM is providing greater opportunities for many bumiputera students to obtain their degrees. UiTM makes access to tertiary education, which may otherwise have not been possible, easily available for some of them. The argument is much like some of the critical comments I received for an earlier post on Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR), which argued that I shouldn't criticise UTAR because it enables access by Chinese students squeezed out of our public universities.

My post here isn't about the role of UiTM. My beef is with the fact that UiTM has the cheek to spend some RM50,000 to put up 2 pages worth of full-colour advertisement to declare itself a “world-class university”. More money was likely to have been burnt on advertisements in the Malay newspapers as well.

After Datuk Kapten Professor Dr Hashim Yaakob's disastrous attempts at boosting his own ratings with self-congratulatory newspaper advertisements, billboards, banners and more advertisements on Universiti Malaya (UM), the vice-chancellor of UiTM, Dato' Seri Prof Dr Ibrahim Abu Shah has obviously not learnt the lesson of his peer who got the sack. I wonder if the term of Dato' Seri Prof Dr Ibrahim Abu Shah is up for renewal, hence the apparent pressure to “impress”?

Dato' Seri Professor Dr Ibrahim Abu Shah

A visit to the UiTM website today will also see it framed by its lofty slogan “Gloabl Aspiration... A World-Class University” on every page.

Back to the 2-page advertisement – I will not be able to write a complete deconstruction of it (or it'll take me another 3 hours to complete this post, and it'll probably bore you to death) but to focus on some of the ridiculous which “justified” UiTM's world class status.

For those who have not seen the advertisement, it was entitled “Evolution of A World-Class University: Driving National Development through 13 Dimensions of Excellence”. The remainder of the ad extolled on “these 13 dimensions that UiTM's status as a world-class university is clearly evident”.

Research & Publications
In terms of innovations, UiTM won the highest number of medals (18 in total) amongst the Malaysian universities at the prestigious Geneva Inventor's Award in 2005. While in publications, the University published a total of 68 titles placing UiTM as the university with the highest number of academic publications among universities who are members Majlis Penerbitan Ilmiah Malaysia.
Regular readers will know the type of contempt I hold for the “prestigious” Geneva Inventor's “Award”, which is essentially tokens of appreciation from the trade show organisers to generous paying participants from 3rd world countries to the event like Malaysia and Iran.

As for the number of titles published? I'm certain that Kian Ming will agree that 68 publications for a university the “size” of UiTM is worse than mediocre and that doesn't even take into consideration the quality of the journals and publications.

Intake Based on Meritocracy

This has to be the biggest joke of the advertisement.
Though large in capacity UiTM is stringent on the criteria of student intake, adhering strictly to the requirements of Admission Unit (UPU) of the Ministry of Higher Education which is strongly based on meritocracy.
Does the vice-chancellor of UiTM need a gentle reminder on the definition of meritocracy – which will probably only serve to highlight UiTM is one of the least meritocratic public universities in Malaysia. UiTM was afterall born out of the Government's extensive affirmative action policy for the bumiputeras. Do we need to also remind the vice-chancellor that his former boss once screamed at the top of his lungs that “no non-bumiputera students shall ever set foot in UiTM”?

International Standards
UiTM is the first institution of higher learning in the world to receive the prestigious ISO 9001:2000 award in the scope of corporate management for all its management services and the scope of teaching and learning in all its 24 faculties and 12 branch campuses all over Malaysia... This certification signifies that UiTM meets the highest world standards in terms of quality for its corporate teaching and learning practices, placing UiTM as an outstanding example of world-class standards.
Do you know why UiTM is the first “world-class” institution of higher learning to receive the ISO certification – a process which costs hundreds of thousands of ringgit? It's because the certification has almost no relevance whatsoever to the actually quality of academic teaching and research at the university. Hence, no university worth its salt will believe that an ISO certification is a requirement, much less a certification worth shouting about.

For example, almost no IT company will attempt a painful ISO certification process, except for reasons of misleading naïve clients. The certification process only reviews the documentation and file management process, and does nothing to evaluate the quality of a company's products or software codes. In fact, most of the time, these assessors know nothing about writing software!

The above are just 3 of the "dimensions" highlighted in the advertisement. The rest of the reasons provided are either riddled with unsubstantiated claims or irrelevant facts and figures – UiTM has “the highest number of students with 100,000 to date... Only the best governance and a good solid system, will an institution be able to manage such a large organisation”. (!!?)

What's more, UiTM claims to have a “World-Class Alumni” and listed more than 15 “illustrious personalities” who are managing directors or CEOs or chairmen of Malaysian listed companies. Err... wait, are these Malaysian companies “world-class” companies with sprawling empires all over the world? Or are they our very own jaguh kampungs?

And what's almost laughable, “UiTM's graduates are accepted at the world level because of their ability to communicate in English and their good communication skills”. No statistics are of course given, as to the number of graduates UiTM contributes to the unemployed pool on a yearly basis, despite claims of “Graduate Marketability”.

Finally, in Malaysia, you can never complete your attempts at self-congratulatory messages without dragging our Prime Ministers into the picture (literally). While UM plastered its 1-page congratulatory advertisement with our Prime Minister's mugshot, UiTM went one better, by plastering its 2-page advertisement with both our Prime and Deputy Prime Minister's mugshots. See another brown-nosing attempt by the vice-chancellor here.

So what should actually qualify as markers that one has turned into a world class institution? Pretty simple really, and of course, blatantly ignored by UiTM's vice-chancellor:
  • How many of UiTM's academics publish research in internationally recognised journals in recent years?

  • What percentage of UiTM academics are PhD holders? Has there been any collaborations done in recent years with the top 20 or 30 universities in the world?

  • Are UiTM graduates in demand by some of the largest multinational companies locally and overseas?

  • How selective is UiTM or how high (or low) are the entry criteria into UiTM set?

  • Where did UiTM rank in some of the often cited global university ranking tables such as the one compiled by Shanghai JiaoTung University or The Times Higher Education Supplement?
The above are just some very very simple questions which will clearly establish if UiTM is any where near “world-class” standards. As far as I'm concerned, it's not even anywhere near the top of the class for Malaysian universities – definitely far from my favourites when recruiting local graduates.

When will Malaysian vice-chancellors learn that becoming “world-class” is a lot more than just putting up an advertisement with some half-baked arguments and statistics to justify being “world-class”? The only consolation in the advertisement is that at the very least, the English is good (while the one by UM was atrocious).

I think the time has come for our new Minister of Higher Education, Tok Pa to review Dato' Seri Prof Dr Ibrahim Abu Shah's contract to see if it really justifies an extension (or a termination).

p.s., I'll try to put up a scan of the advertisement tomorrow some time

I'm shocked.

After reading almost all of the comments (got tired as it all spells out UiTM Bodoh), i would have to say that the act of mud slinging each other is clearly lacking of manners.

Yeah, i'm currently reading law in UiTM, and Yeah, it shouldn't be called a World Class University.

Nonetheless, not all graduates from UiTM could be generalized the way most of you would like to believe and think. I believe in intellect, and i also believe that there is a fair bunch of smart, intelligent bumiputeras in UiTM.

Programming your brains to think that UiTM is a BAD university doesn't really help those excellent students when they face the real world. A lot would be said towards these graduates just by the virtue of them studying there.

It's not like US students decide how our university spends their money. It's not like we can comment on that anyway. But at the end of the journey, we're the ones' getting bad press.

POINT BEING: (1) UiTM is not as bad as you think. (2)Even if you think it's BAD, you don't necessarily have to point out racist stuff(will make you like anakmelayu).

I respect those who can relate their experience and comment with political correctness. Such individuals should be treasured as they will be the ones' rationalizing while the rest choose to bulldoze in without any direction. Such idiocy would not make a better Malaysia.

Cheers.

all in all, good intertainment. Some comments made, are just super childish. It cracks me up. No need to call names.
Just to get back to the real issue, about the world class UITM. Not much to comment on that, personally I took it just like any other advertisement. He's selling something and people are suppose to buy it albeit a funny one with all the mugshots.
Aside, would love that everybody gets the chance to study in a world class university (a real one) but it wouldnt accomodate everybody. So someody at one point has to study at those non world class. They have to find another way to the top.

need i say more?

Taylor's law debate? NOT EVEN RECOGNIZED. it's a sham, complicated arguments doesn't make sense for the 'appointed' judges. It's a set up for taylor's to believe that they are superior..

I personally wouldn't demean taylor's that way but since there are people here who are bloody arrogant... i just had to.

The fact still remains...UITM was thrashed by the Mighty Taylor college in the Law debate

Anonymous said...

i don't know why we want to compare uitm with taylor college, hey common la u think you're smart enough when we want to study at private college, and like low class if you study at IPTA? only stupid people said so haha..

as uitm law student who will be at Nottingham Univ to do my LLM this coming Sept. i don't see uitm is far below other univ..

i'm proud to say that i can entered into most prestigious univ in UK based on my UiTM's qualification, it means that uitm degree is still recognized around the world.

so don't try to accuse uitm with such ridiculous statement esp for such comparing with loosing in small debate competition.

UiTM cannot be compared with other universities in Malaysia, what more with other Us in the world?! However, it is a university we need to educate many unfortunate bumiputeras who do not have the chance to go to other "world class" universities. Thats actually one of the many reasons why they could not get top students enroll at their university as most of them (around 2,500++) Malay students got scholarships to study medecine, engineering, accountancy, economics and others overseas. I have more than 20 friends graduated from top universities in the world such as MIT, Cambridge and Berkeley.... and all of them are malays. Well, it us subjective... but at least... we know that if we got the chance, we can do it of course....

I'm only graduated from UiTM.... but I am proud of it.

After reading 219 comments, I am embarrassed to see how racist we are towards each other.

When people pointed out our weakness,we should be humble and not mocked that person. Instead of being rude we should apologize and promise to do better. However all I'm seeing is being racist and sarcastic towards each other.

What shall we get from all of these? The author is expressing his opinion and as far as I'm concerned it is the truth. No matter how bitter it is we have to accept it.

What's up with all the chinese and indian need to go back to their country? The faster we accept we need to share Malaysia the better. So are you saying people like me with mixed parentage need to go back and if so which country? China? India? does the fact that I'm partially Malay change anything?

Please stop this useless argument and go back to the main point and the faster we can progress.

first of all, im not malay or chinese. im thinking abaout all of the comment that ppl made here. its quite HOt and i find this word.

"There are a lot of intelligent bloggers here who have very high academic qualifications here."

i agree to this ppl that we all here are inteligent blogger. so why we keep figthing. we all are malaysian. but to think its again i realize "no fight not hot" so, no one or less will come here to comment or became racist or whatever. simply i can say just watch your word as we all here is intelligent blogger. keep comment but positive and productive. there is no use to say "u chinese or u malay so.... blahh blahh..". giving suggestion is better to improve our country education level.

im not student of UITM.UM or UTAR but i realize that our education level is is not too god but we are still the best in asia. so think about it. all we need is "together" make our level to world class level. but i know im just wasting time here. whatever i say, whatever government do, "chinese is chinese, malay is malay," no one can change it that we are still arguing to each other. thats is the fact.

one more thing i want to remind you all. we are the "various kind of kataks living under the tempurung malaysia" .because of we are under the tempurung, we cant see each other because of the darkness of stupid racistma.

why not we 'just make a hole from the tempurung so we can see a light of hope'?

first of all....i juz want to let u know my english is extremely bad.....
of course, because i form kampung...my parent juz a farmer......
but i try my self to do the best to learn and speek in english....i was very diffrent with chineseeee....
u all from the educated family...u have learn english since u are kid....that why u r english far2 better than me,
and please dot't kutuk2 me, malay and uitm.....
uitm is not bad at all...it depend on the students.....if u are good so people will know and recognize u....
i dont understand...why intel, shell maxis umw and others big company have come to uitm and give scholarship to the engineering student?
are they just want to wasting their money to this low grade uni?why?why they have employ uitm student?even they only got average result?
and i dont understand why my friend is very fast to naik pangkat, now he is one of the top position at oil and gas company?
so the answer is simple....people dont see which uni u come....people just see....what skill do u have, how u can make money for them.....org nak cari pekerja yang boleh bagi untung...bukan dari univeristy yg power2.

second...we cant compare uitm with the mit or others uni in the world...because uitm i very young as a university...before that uitm is just itm....
if u want to campare with the oxfrod....of course uitm is left far2 behind....UM UKM USM lagi pengalaman kalau nk dibandingkan dgn uitm....
tak mustahil la these uni is very good....in research and other aspect...so please give a time to uitm to learn from these uni

uitm agak muda....tak mustahil satu hari nnt bila dah matang...uitm akn terima kemasukan bangsa lain...sama seperti mrsm dan matrikulasi.

budk kecik pun boleh bagi kritikan tapi solution????????critics and solution should come together....

and lastly....
biar la vc itm nak cakp uitm world class ke apa ke.......lantak dia lah.....tu matlamat dia.....kalau dia tak dapat capai world class pun at least dia ada
matlamat....and at least dia akan dapat capai apa yang terbaik...world class tu memang jauh lagi....jauh sgt world class tu..mcm cerita shoot the moon la....
macam jepun dengan us tu agak mustahil kan.....kita perlukan masa......
solutionnya???????siapa yang nak bagi????????????tak ke bodoh org mcm tu????malaysian people love to critics!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!but stupid in giving an idea to that particular problem...

ok la aku pun hancur english lagi ni....kalau salah tu mtk maaf la...byk lagi yang perlu belajar.....tlg jgn kutuk saya ye...nk kutuk tu tlg bagi solution skali k....if not...i give u holly word " f*u*c*k off mr stupid"!hehehehe
germany japanese and russia..are they use engislh? can we imagine how they can develope their country?
so the answer is simple......the most important thing is knowledge....if u have knowledge...polple will dont look at ur GRAMMAR.....fuck u if u say ur english is bad....
at least u can understand what i try to tell u is enough....:)p

i've just found this page and i've read all those comments...blah...
Well, please dont simply criticize Uitm or other races as well...
Actually i want to tell my story and also voice out some opinions here...
i am a pure chinese, being raised in a small town which the majority race is chinese nearly 90%...i attended Chinese primary and secondary school in my hometown...
SEE, i grew up in a place like that...
i admit that most people from my hometown are chinese people who dislike other races people, and also dont really understand people of other races especially the malays...
i mean there are also malays living there, but most of them come from other places and reasons for staying are mostly for work...yeah i mean like teachers and government staffs...

when i am in my younger age, i used to heard many critics from those adults, just something like..."the government is not fair","the malays are pigs"....
actually now i realise that people who said those words were actually not highly educated people.

i never hate people of other races,if possible i want to be friends with them...

back to my personal story...after secondary school, i was offered the matrikulasi course and i took it....while most other students would prefer for TAR college even though they are offered for lower six classes...the reasons is they are afraid of the STPM and they thought they might not get in the public universities...even some of my classmates who also got matrikulasi but rejected the offer and go for TAR collge(what the hell???so many people especially non-bumis are dying for that)...reason??? afraid of malays since those adults from my town always said that "malays are very naughty, they steal things and bully other people"...well is this true???

Anyway i am happy for the matrikulasi course...At matriks time,i began to know about malay people...they are actually not bad, some of them are very kind and helpful...my roomates and classmates are all malays...some of them are good in study and some of them maybe not so good....it depends on individual

some of them are lazy but some of them are hardworking too...

so please do not say "Malays are lazy and stupid" or equivalent words in the future, bcoz not all are like that...

i also found some good values from most malay people...like good manners, polite, tolerence and so on

Maybe the malay boys are a bit POYO when talking, but it actually makes them very friendly and also not selfish ...most of my chinese friends do not have these qualities.

The malay girls are vey polite and bersopan santun all the time, plus lemah lembut...very comfortable to be friends with...

i've done many things together with my malay friends during matiks time, like majlis makan malam, berbuka puasa, watching movies, doing homeworks, playing caroms, doing drama for merdeka day and many more...all are sweet memories

now i am studying in usm,not so much malays here...i miss my former classmates now... here in usm is like they have a seperation between races...normally the chinese students here will never mingle with the malay students. even the indians seldom talk to other races people...i also heard about a rumor of the chinese students fighting with the malay students for a certain club's position most likely the president of the club??? isn't it a sad fact...

What i want to say now is please do not hate each others,we all should be united, and to live in harmony right?

About being united, first of all is to never hate each other, then think of that we are such a big family and never try to hurt each other feelings...

About Uitm,i think it is not fair to criticize it...because Uitm is still a university that contribute to the society just like other universities...so put away those jealousy

and please keep in mind that bumiputras are not just malays,it also include other races like orang asli, bumi sabah and bumisarawak...

that's all i want to say,thank you...

please always remember that unity leads to great achievements in future...

Anonymous said...

100% agree with u, it show taht u are more educated than the peolple who are acting like a professor....give a milion of criticze about uitm and mlay.....what can i conclude here is youth chinese they are totaly forget the history....and if we compare with the older or veteren chinese they are far far batter than the youth.....becoz they know their background and their history...so plaease don't maki2 or kutuk2 sesama a dengan kita.....malay people lead the country and you chinese do you business and take the wealth from that.........cina dah kaya....apa nak dengki lagi dengan melayu.......sory for my bad english.....hopefully kita xgaduh sesama sendiri....skrg kita pikir mcmna nak kayakan diri kita lagi...pk nk majukan diri lagi....tq

Hi, I read this thread in one night's sitting. i am a Malay, a Lex Legus Bacchaleurette from ITM. I am not enamoured with English language lovers for we are Malaysians and should be proud of our national language. From my salad days as a student, I do find some colleague's English a bit wanting but it does not detract from the fact that they can grasp the issues at hand, due to inherent intelligence and good guidance from our lecturers. I can't get over the evil smelling puke from venom welling inside chauvinists breasts when they discuss / bashed ITM, the Malays, the hinterland. May be Hitler's Dr Mengele had experimented with their parents' brains during WWII..somehow..it does seem like the result of some mad, demented minds. Whenever some of these people were challenged to pick up the gauntlet by very reasonable, based on facts commentors, they resort to saying the Malays are emotional, Ingrish very atrocious, cry babies..I guess there's no sense in trying to reason with a scarecrow, it'll still be there flapping in the wind or standing still in the heat of the day. Can't the people who say English! English! English speak and understand Malay? Were you all not taught? Well, I guess you have either denounced your citizenship or your Malay is as atrocious as their English. Thank you.

Why are we fighting? why did this turn into an issue?

I am a Malaysian, and a muslim. I study in IIUM for Architecture.

There are pros and con of this article. I have to say, the fact the VC spend RM 50,000 for advertisement is ridiculous. I think it would be better to use the money to upgrade the facilities to an even more first-class state..and maybe invest in the R&D field more.

And again we are figtinh and criticizing each others race. If this goes on, i think Malaysia should stop selling the idea that we are a peaceful country...just because we have no war on the outside doesn't mean we don't internal problems.

We should be thankful to UITM too as they have produce some of the early academicians that help our country to what it is now.

How can a post about a RM 50,000 expenditure on advertisement turn into a tug-of-war between race and universities.

It doesn't matter what race you are or where you study at..it's what you'll become or have become after graduating.

UITM does have some good schools such as their architecture scholl is the best in Malaysia, it's so hard to compete with them. Another good school is their school of Law..and from this thread i have learnt that their school of accountancy is also good.

This is education. We should be viewing this problem positively, why you want one university to be better than the other? Why can't all university be the best, that way, we can turn Malaysia into an education destination.

Wouldn't it be better if we have more and more smart and educated people in the country? thus we will be more economically balanced and stronger with more intellectuals in this country?

UITM was formed to help Malay. Are you a Malay? Biar orang melayu kutuk bangsa sendiri. We know our mistakes are so dreadful and we are spilling blood on our own hands.

And yes I also do think the VC is trying to bodek our PM..this is what you call politics. It happens. They're such stuck ups. Haih, sedih kan?

I'm only 19. a student. I hope you adults could help me to clear our beloved bloggers threads from such insolent comments.

Be proud of what we have. If you are not happy about UITM's position, do something about it.. propose to your dean on how to beat UITM, not come here an expressed your anger.

Go to anger management class.

I think this is why Malaysia cannot term in the freedom to speak because we get soo emotional when discussing something as little as this.

It's good that we point out their mistakes, but there is no need to criticize, opinions will do, opinions on how to improve our education system, not to bring it down even more.

Ingat, kita ada maruah, Jangan cemar maruah sendiri.

I know i'm smart. I study hard, relentlessly to be as good as anyone, not just the chinese, but i also learn from them.

If tak puas hati dengan my comment. You can trash me, but just think before you thrash me.

I will report you if you continue to create some sort of hate in this educational thread.

I'm (unfortunately) a student here in this sad UiTM n it is true that this place sucks real bad i feel sorry that i have to go here since my family doesn't earn enough to get me enrolled elsewhere.

I did well in SPM but y'know when it comes to govt scholarships, the bumiputras who r non-Muslims are always second-best when juxtaposed against a muslim bumiputra or malay. It's hard to prove but it's true.

U see, even the abbrev UiTM is said to actually mean Universiti Ini Tlg Melayu. wtf? They make it clear dat even if ur an iban or a bdyuh or a mix, when ur not a malay ur just not up to their standard n therefore deserve no affirmative actions.

In my faculty, the lecturers hold only master's dgree. Very few hv a PhD. but some hv d cheeks to boasts about studying in d UK, but then come back here and deliver knowledege very much of Malay quality. What good is a UK qualification if u cant impart d knowledge well? And to even think of being proud of it?

One of my lecturers is also very un-professional she mixes her domestic problems with work n lashes it out on us students.

I can't be wrong coz i'm a student here.

There's no wireless internet.

They hv built useless fountains at the chancellery which cost about RM1mill. It could hv bn used for building a new facilty, like a student club or something. Nothing fancy.

Most of the buildings r left to rot, like the business n law fac, which at one glance dont look like a faculty at all.

N since when did making the wearing of collared T-shirt compulsory been a good reflection of a polite society?

Call me ungrateful but, i know i deserve better even bfore i knew i was gonna end up in this trash can of what d malays like to call UiTM.

So much for being world class

And as to Zalika, we dont live in an ideal world. So open ur eyes

1. UiTM does hv good archi, engine, law n business schools, but only the best in Malaysia. Calling it "world class" is an obtuse exagerration.

2. Since when did we minorities get involved with the decision to tell d world that malaysia is a peaceful country? We hv always bn marginalised n u majority ppl r pretty good at hiding the skeletons in ur damn closet.

3. Since when did yin stand without yang? constructive criticisms shouldnt b contemplated as to be negative all the time.

Come on la.

Anonymous said...

All i'm saying is Tony was right about whether or not UiTM is world-class.

Racism is not the central point.

Res ipsa loquitor? I see most of us here actually went to a law school.

We're all kindred spirits.

As for the Chinese n Malays (or if ur of the Indian persuasion), open ur eyes, we'r all human beings.

I'm bisexual, n r u gonna propose another new law to protect or discriminate against ppl like me?

The Chinese hv all d reasons in the world to b proud of their sort-of inborn success streak, but that doesn't make arrogance a right emotion to feel.

The Malays too, must remember that Tanah Melayu is Tanah Melayu bcoz it was named that way, not bcoz it really is Tanah melayu. In fact, the Orang Asli should be the ones that have the right to claim Tanah Orang Asli since they were here earlier than any of us did.

And yea, until when are we gonna depend on affirmative action which is constantly hostile to to the non-bumis to get "there"?

Pls stop making ppl who cant speak good english feel like they have AIDS or something. I was a lousy english speaker too, but very recently i got a Band 6 for MUET and Band 7.5 for TOEFL
but that doesnt justify calling ppl lousy english speakers

And finally, as for Malaysian universities, i dont see us going at par anytime near with the least to say, Singapore's nanyang Tech Univ, as corruptions in our politics n the dearth of cohesion within the society still haunt us like a cancer that can never heal.

Good luck Malaysia. As for me, looks like i'll just have to suffer the dreadfulness of being a non-Malay UiTM student for the next 3 yrs. That is, if no random rich Chinese here is gonna be kind enough to put me into a university listed on the THES

LOL

p/s i wish i could find a reason to love Malaysia like the MALAYS do

Wow,how impressive for such a blog to exist(in Malaysia),as to wheteher UiTM is first class or nor is pretty obvious isn't it?The advertisement(S) are simply too ostentatios as far as i am concern. This shows how imprudent the uni management is in monetary management when the money can be more well spent on other stuff,a world class uni?come on, cut the bull shit and let's face the reality together, the uni will never be one as long as meritrocracy does not prevail, universities like harvard, yale, princeton etcetera excel because of their culture of excellence whereby they have recruited the best among the best in the world, notably the jewish when they are fleeing from the Nazi regime,I see there is no way the university can ever achieve this if that is what the malay(s) want.

just stop this nonsense..if you guys really wanna know this blog writers(tony p. and kian ming)they are not really graduate from those universities..(oxford,lse,cambridge).they just a left out student from whichever high school(i cannot name it) who merely a loser.they just bluffing about it.If they really are educated person, they should know what is good or not to say. Those people like them really don't know what to do in their life so they decide to post this blog. One thing i agree with them is about uitm's ads, it really waste a lot of money. But the fact is, these guys are merely loser where i never met a graduate student from a very very prestige college and university can be so racist and enjoyed doing this. to mr tony p and kian ming, if you are really educated student, show it. Obviously show it with your mentality and not emotionally. I think i don't have to teach you how to do it right? This is a show off blog. If you read these guys background, you'll see there are something not right about their eductaion background. For example, they say that they are graduate student from these prestige universities (LSE,Cambridge, where they hardly mention about their college and the education there, the opportunities if you all go there)which is hardly to believe because if you really go to LSE, we tend to love our own universities because its the place where we get our degree,ms and Phd and they hardly mention about it..haha its funny when they're trying to trick people who only at their level..dude,you really have low level of intelligent quotient..oh if u must know its for IQ.. you guys merely a politician people who don't discover the other side of your mind where you actually can do more than what you can do now..stop playing with education because it doesn't really matter where you graduate but how you survive in this cruel world..believe me..there's another world than you believe now..if you said that these uitm student don't know that there's another world for em', you are just like em'....cool down and do something good..not this..not this blog..and for you guys uitm and utar student, don't feel down about yourself and for sure don't feel arrogant about your college..just do your thing..study and remember that most of success people in this world are not those who have a very good education..they used to be loser but they cope with it..look where they are right now..its not about your studies..its about how you used your mind and discover opportunities..this blog is full with crap and lie...

It's me again, Khairul Idzwan...

Anyway, it's shocking to see that the issue of whether uitm is a world class uni or not is still hot till today. I'm quite shocked to see that this entry still received comments despite the entry has been posted for one year!

From the way MOST people speak, I can conclude that most of us are still not ready to live as one Bangsa Malaysia. Most of us speak with emotion not with wisdom. We speak with hatred, not with love. We speak to defend our own race, not to create a sense of belonging.

It is sad to see that after 50 years of independence, prejudice still existed between us, Malaysians. What shall we do to stop this prejudice-minded people?

As for the entry, it is true. As a UiTM student, I agree [as what I commented earlier here] that UiTM is still not a world class university. We still lack behind in certain areas. However, I can say that UiTM is struggling hard to become a good university. A university that will make Malaysia proud.

I found a comment here which said that this land should be called Tanah Orang Asli as they arrived earlier than the Malays. What's with the naming? This land is now called Malaysia. It is ours. Our land. Yes there is Article 153 in the Federal Constitution which governed the issue of affirmative action.

As youngsters [or as the 2nd or 3rd generation of Malaysians after the independence], we should not forget that the affirmative action was founded by our forefathers to ensure racial harmony among Malaysians as the Malays then was not as successful as today.

The main issue is that there are some parties [Malays] who misused the provision. There are rich, successful Malays who used the provision to make them richer.

Hmm.... anyway, this blog is really great. For me, this blog had touches issues that many Malaysians feared to speak out publicly.

Lastly, just a reminder to all future commentators, COMMENT WISELY. COMMENT WITH YOUR WISDOM, NOT YOUR EMOTION. Post your comment that cross racial barrier, not one that try hardly to defence your own race. Malaysia's future depends on us, Malaysians; Bangsa Malaysia!

Anonymous said...

It's still as hot as pisang goreng coz ppl like u come back and check for progresses In case u hadnt noticed.

Again Idzwan we live in a cruel world where idealism remains an idea. So with both emotion and wisdom we speak, not wisdom alone coz after all, we're all human beings.

UiTM is struggling to become a good university???? Very recently UiTM recruited more and more undeserving bumiputras, causing massive trouble to the existing douchebags, like problems to find lodgings and stuff. Explain that.

As for the issue of Tanah Org Asli, u obviously have missed the point addressed by savemefromthishell.

Thank u for acknowledging that the roop problem goes back to greedy rich malays who want to keep on enriching their fcuking asses even at the price of racial discord.

to those who actually despise uitm ---the university itself, or the vc, or the graduates, or the undergraduates..
some of u have the point there.. i indeed agree it is not a world class university.. and it chooses only bumi.. remember that not all bumis are malays, so please stop referring bumis as malays only. those non-malays who study in uitm will feel very minor, though indeed they are, and insignificant.
trust me that some of them will feel mocked or insulted to be addressed that way.
anyway,.....................
it was initially a topic or an opinion on the university itself..why have to touch on racism here??
there is actually no concrete harm that's done with the statement that uitm is a world-class university. let it be.we all know which is true.many other universities beat this one. in fact, there are many arguments and disagreements too, when it comes to portraying..for an example, a restaurant that's named,"the best restaurant" is not the real best restaurant. merely a name.
negative or positive thoughts and comments, everyone has it.. nothing's perfect.everywhere, everytime.. no one can stop it.
i personally agree that it's a waste of money, a waste of time trying to do all these advertisement kinda thing, and the students might be a bit blind to see that they are NOT actually in a real world-class university. those with MUET result of only band2 can get in!! hellOooo??!!
totally, totally, incomparable to even some other local universities, not to mention oxford. lecturers are too lenient... blablabla. who actually really gives a damn about what they call themselves anyway? i bet no chinese is even interested to study in uitm even though they are offered.it's just that there is no point at all condemning others when u have way better things to do..i am definitely not siding anyone here. not afraid or anything, just that, it's not a necessity to do so.

kesiannnn uitm! sedihhh dan malang sangat!

i was a student of uitm, n i guess that some of ur opinions r right at certain extent. (tho some were exaggerating!)

however, i believe that we shouldnt create hatred among us. we're malaysians, remember??? we reflect each other. if u chinese, say that uitm lecturers suck, well some of them are chinese! so lets start to think on how we can improve ourselves, specifically uitm. how uitm can improve in terms of its syllabus n wat not, instead of spreading racist sorta comments.

not to brag, but i was the best student in my stream when i was in my secondary school (smk kepong) which is full of chinese students. n ive just received an award from uitm- anugerah khas pengarah (anugerah pelajar terbilang) since my cgpa is 4.00. - so what???? does it matters that im the best among chinese n malays (in my school)? i no there are numerous chinese students which are much better!! regardless on where they study- mmu, utar etc

we're malaysians!!! we should all improve! not underestimating n downgrading others. i think the whites will smile n have a big laugh looking at our comments here.

we should judge, but to seek improvements... not to say craps like - 'balik china', 'pendatang' etc. c'mon!!!! we're malaysianssss!!!!

my best buddy is a chinese guy n we really respect each other n discuss matters openly to seek improvements n what we could do. i make fun of chinese accents n he keeps on making jokes about malays new terms -poyo, dasat, tak bley bla n stuff.. but we knew we had no bad intentions. but u guys, hey u r really tryin to prove something here! eg- chinese is better than malays, n malays are useless, or uitm is a joke n stuff.. thats a bit too much.. i guess.

well, enough said. i didnt like uitm before, but once i entered, i loved it. ive never heard anyone bribed his/her lecturer for an A or stuff like that. n the chinese lecturers there were very kind. they taught me mandarin n i loved the language a lot! :)

im proud to be a malaysian, n would love to see all of us unite by the time i get back from france for my degree! :) :) :)

It is so interesting to read all you young people discussing this issue.

Let me quickly introduce myself. Let's say I am in my 50's , Malaysian (Chinese)but went to English school ..those days there was English, Chinese or Malay schools, unlike today.

When I was growing up the government policy of education was redefined and more opportunities were given to bumi for higher education. In the 60's and 70's it was so difficult to get in University Malaya. I did not get in because I wasn't one of the top students.

Well in those days UM was considered a top university because of its students..they were all smart, hardworking and competetive. Anyone who was given an opportunity to get in studied real hard to get the degrees, hence the standards are high. It was a prestigious university.

Well things have changed today and with many not so "good students" entering the uiversity and under government controls and rules, the standard in UM has dropped and not many bright students today even wish to enrol there. If you look around irrespective of race, bright and smart students do not enter UM.

The point I wish to make is that a good university needs time to create, nuture and be recognised. It is like respect. It can only be earned and not otherwise. Look at the world class universities for ways to improve..how they did it. Well the answer is to get good competitive students, attract them there and soon the university will earn medals for research, inventions etc.

Singapore is a smart state. It offers all straight A students free education in their universities. So Malaysian Chinese are usually their targets and why not.. in the end the brain drain. The education Dept should see this and Singapore from stealing and robbing us of our most precious assest..ie human resource. The education ministry must see that a smart student lost to Singapore is irreplacable. Just imagine ..if Bill Gates is a Malaysian and he invented Windows in Malaysia and sold it to the world.. how rich can this country be.

Years ago the then Prime Minister Tun Razak recognised that the rural Malays were much behind in education than the other races and he set a target to get them educated to avoid their daughters getting married at 16 years. Now 3 decades later there is an achievement and few girls are married at 16 and many now read, albeit now too good in English. I salute the government for this policy.

The next stage is surely to alleviate the level of quality of education. One just has to be the best. Aim for the best and we will be the best. Along the way there must be a way whereby race and religion should not interfer, as to do so will divert the main issue. If there is no earnesty to achieve quality then it will not arrive.

Competetion is good. When there is competetion, people work harder, productivity and quality improves overall. Students study harder. So why kill competetion? I once spoke to a Japanese expatriate and he told me that they love to invest in Malaysia because the private sector is very competetive so he makes sure his workers are paid the best, finds the best brains, work their best. And soon they would be the best in the world.

Imagine the special bumi status is removed. Everyone is the same.. what happens.. At young age the students works hard..and harder and harder.. if he wants to go to university. If not he goes wash cars! This is what the non Malays in Malaysia are drilled from young. So what happens? They work at every opportunity because if they don't they will not eat.

Personally I feel it is time that the government removes all the clutches so that the standards of Malays can be improved. It will be painful and first but the result will be for the better.

Best of luck Malaysia.

"When you say the teaching staff of other universities teaches about 6,8 or 10 hours, are you only referring to contact time with students in lecture halls? What about supervising, tutorials, preparing lectures, supervising students research??"

I agree with your statement. Those lecturers worked like vigilant guard dogs. FYI, in UiTM Malacca campus, a lecturer has to teach averagely 16 hours per week compared to a lecturer in other higher learning institute like UM who only has to teach 6-8 hour per week.
Imagine that.

Not only lecturers, but we students in UiTM have to work harder than any students. You know what? We are looking like panda because they are tonnes of works to be done. We have to juggle with assignments and presentations and at the same time organize functions and perform drama, construct teaching modules for slow learners. Everything that we did involved with people; from student's council to bureaucratic representatives. It had been a good experience, I would say. Though most of the time, it was TRAUMATIC. All for the sake of UiTM’s standard.

Do not belittle us and say that UiTM undergraduates are useless and do not function much. We are trying really hard to improve ourselves.

Malays, don't you all see this?

chinese never express their anger in front of you. Many of them have to suppress their anger because of ISA. Because you guys INSTLL fear in us. Screw you.

But when you go on to internet, then you see the true identity and deep hatred that chinese have toward the malays. So all those hand-holding advertisement in the TV is simply propaganda and none of it is real.

Stop talking about toleration because it has no effect whatsoever on any party. We do not need to tolerate anyone and neither do we need any toleration from anyone else. The chinese can do just fine ANYWHERE, ANYTIME but the Malaysian economics will crumble if ALL CHINESE move out of Malaysia. Screw you guys for asking us to move out. You should thank us for even wanting to stay in this piece of discriminatory, fear-instilling, nepotism-ruled country. You should BE THANKFUL that we contribute so much to the eocnomic pie of Malaysia EVEN without the SPECIAL RIGHTS.

As I said, toleration is nothing. What we need is action. The chinese do nothing and only express their fear/anger on the internet. The Malays do nothing because they think that so long they are fine, it's fine. IT IS NOT FINE. IF WE WERE TO SHARE THIS COUNTRY, THIS LAND, admit your fault, admit your weakness and move on. Don't criticize others for criticizing you.

I told people that I am patriotic. I am. I talk and I express my anger because I CARE!!!! If the whole country doesn't care, the country will go down to abyss real soon. Trust me. So you Malays should thank everyone else for speaking up! Do not feel defensive just because some of the words might be too hurting. Try to learn from the criticism and IMPROVE.

Look at all the comments. It's a shame that chinese have to hide under anonymous name to prevent any action from being taken on them. My Malay brothers and sisters, don't you see it? Don't you see the fear in their eyes? Don't you have compassion over these so-called "migrators" who work so hard to improve the country's economy? Why must you continue to persecute us with ISA? Why must you continue to exercise your special rights on us? Why shun us? Is that what your religion teach you to do? Is that what you are told by your teachers in school?

Awake, everyone. For the chinese, I know that it is hard to study in Malaysia. After all, the JPA scholarship is still going to go to the Malays anywhere. BUT you have a chance to make a difference if you unite together. Everyone said that black is going to be opppressed by the whites, but they stood up in one accord and they beat the whites.

For Malays, seriously you guys have taken a lot of things granted. Stop being so self-centered and look at the people around you. Yes, the chinese holds more economic power that you do. But you have all the special rights. If you really care about this country, why not you try to live a live without that special rights and EMPATHIZE whith the chinese? Try to understand the fear and anger that your fellow chinese have and learn.

Together, we can make a better Malaysia. If only people stop blaming at each other. UiTM is NOT world class. Period. Further argument is completely futile. Accept it and improve it if you hate it.

I must say, I admit that the UiTM administration jumped the gun with that ad. It's a noble vision, but they shouldn't have tooted their own horn like that.

But as a UiTM student myself, I resent the implication that we're of a lower class than other university students, irrespective of race. Don't judge a book by its cover. If you do, then don't say you're better than us, because you're not. We do work hard and take studies seriously. What, do you think it's all fun and games here? For me, it's not where you study, but the way you study. Even if you go to Oxbridge, CalTech, MIT, Harvard or any other top name university, you're nothing if you don't study.

You can criticize constructively, I don't mind. In fact, if I was running UiTM, I'd take those comments and improve, but for those who spews vitriol, just shut up. It doesn't matter if you're Malay or Chinese, or Indian or whatever. Your 'opinions', if you can call it that is unwelcomed.

This blog's comments section is a living proof why racial is a very dangerous thing, not just in Malaysia but around the world. One race can say one thing and suddenly it hurts the other race,it will ignite the fire of hate.

The debates based on racial stuff will never end.So he said his race is better and work harder than any other races, without any doubt the others will reply with "don't just talk, show us some proof...".Then the others will join in and finally it will become a heated debate with lots of bad words.

I understand the good intention of this blog post,to make sure that UiTM come back to earth and it's not a world class university. But that statements like "UiTM is a crap university" or anything like that will anger the UiTM students, which we all had known to be malays. So maybe we all should mind our language while posting blogs.

So here,i'm not going to use the "if" sentences like "if you're a student of UiTM you'll know the truth" or anything similar. It's useless to do that since someone will always reply that with a comment that potrays anger and hate. That type of comment will do nothing except sparks another person's fire of hate.

Remember that it doesn't matter where you graduated from, what pointer did you score or anything like that. The most important thing is can you survive the outer world?Well if you can survive it,then you are the best graduates regardless where were you graduated from.

Dear all,

It is true that this discussion of UiTM being claimed by the VC as World Clas becoming into an outbursts of racial 'Quarrel'. I do wonder, where has our sense of being a Malaysian gone? Whrere was the feeling that our forefathers had instilled into the citizen of this country during our 'crusade' for indepandece? Where has it vanished?

Chinese migrators? After 50 years and they are still migrators? Laughable. Since when the Malays of the country are the original settlers of this land? What happen to the orang asli? Extinct? Has no one ever stop to think that Malays are also migrators from the Kepulauan Melayu? Without Parameswara founding Melaka, do you think any of us (Chinese, Malays and Indians included) would be here? That's already a history, we are all migrators, fated to live in one place. What are the probablity of us 27 million citizens meeting and living together in peace? We are all Malaysians!

When are Malysians going to learn the fact that none of us have anywhere else to go? Is China going to accept the Chinese? They've almost a billion citizens to care for, why do they need anymore chinese? Malays? Is Indonesia or other relevant counries going to accept you? Fat hopes, they also got lots of people too! We all ive here and here only!

It rather saddening also to see this blog, when our government has been boasting about racial harmony to the outside world that we live in but the real truth is right in this blog, and even sadder that we Malaysians are scratching at each other at the slightest provocation and at any chance possible at each other. Are we going to end our independance soon? or Do we want to? Other countries especially the United States would probably like to see that and we'll be another case of Iraq. Is it until something really big happens that only then we will learn (again?)

Everyone has flaws and so does every otther race. Instead of taking offense, why don't try on making the best out of it and learn it to respect each other, not kicking each other out and making a big fuss out of small matters such as Universiti Teknologi Mara? what's the point? If somebody insist that it is true, let it be, why care what other people say? Other universities laugh? who cares? Sometimes we may laugh at other uni's that are less well-known too. Take from the japs for example, they don't care about other universities in other countries. They study in the country and they are proud of it. Why shouldn't we? Are we still living in the midset that we're still young? Uncompetitive? Tell that to Mahathir!

stereotyping? Don't get me started. Who doesn't? Fat people being called 'Bob', chinese being called selfish and money laundering perople. The malays being called lazy and too dependant. What is this? The middle-ages? even in the middle ages we don't call each other that in this country. Ive met really generous chinese and really smart-and -hardworking malays. with stereotyping, what are they then? The rojak?

I won't say I'm a chinese or a malay but I'm proud to say that I'm a citizen of this country. The previlage to live with other races, to live in harmony does not exist in other countries. Just let this issues fall of and fade and earase it from memory. Let the ring of laughter still echoes from the voices of all races, and not the agonising pain cry. In the end:

Long live Malaysia!
Hidup Malaysia!

What with all the fuss.. you all go to Universities to argue about who is top, who is better, world class blaa blaa or to study eh?

No point going to top U in Malaysia if one does not study well.. The title, the hours of lecture, the tutorial and what not (provided differently by different U) are just a tiny percent of the "final product".

It is not about "Hey!, what U are you from?", It's about " Hey!, You knew this? You knew that?, You knew how this work?, Can you do this or that?".

University is a just a helper. Different only by the amount they provide..

Campak la pegi mana2 pun, ada kemahuan ada la jalan..ye dak? XD

Dear all...races
Why do we have to talk about others weaknesses, try to look into ourself, are we good enough to condemn about others? Why dont we define what is Quality in Education as such, ideal for you doesn't mean ideal for others. And how do you define quality, it is in the end not just number and number isn' it? Betterment is for all human not for the single race right?

Anonymous said...

Hi!

I'm a foreign student studying at UiTM, the only reason I'm studying in Malaysia was because your government came to my country to advertised "quality education" in Malaysia. I am quite dissapointed by this blog, because we were given a thick booklet with all Malaysian Univerties, and UiTM listed as internationally linked and World class. I just completed my first semester, and i went through so many experiences, which i will not elaborate on, and I'm planning to continue studying at UiTM.

Reading your comments saddened me so much, to see so many racial discrimination, trust me, its everywhere.... but I am still suprised that you so outspoken about it.

If UiTM is not world class, then is there any website (apart from bloggers) i can refer to. Just wanna get quality education, I am spending thousand of dollars to study in Malaysia..... just wondering "The credibility of this country"... this is not about a product, Your government advertised "Quality Education"... is it all a LIE....

You said in your post: "For example, almost no IT company will attempt a painful ISO certification process, except for reasons of misleading naïve clients. The certification process only reviews the documentation and file management process, and does nothing to evaluate the quality of a company's products or software codes. In fact, most of the time, these assessors know nothing about writing software!"

I think you have no slightest idea about writing software in the outside world. The software standards are far more painful than ISO certification. Many of the software standards have ISO equivalent nowadays. But of course, Malaysia has no competency to evaluate software process and standards and doesn't mean that no IT company will attempt a certification process. I presume you are in IT or studied IT or know something superficial about IT. If you do not know or are not sure about software development processes and the standards, I would suggest you not to make the above analogy. At lest you must try to understand the rigorous software process certification before you made the statement. You will mislead your reader. Just my two cents.

This is not true but at least I hope you have researched into software process before you made this statement.

The software process standards are far more stringent and painful than the ISO standards you are referring to. Of course Malaysia does not have the competency to evaluate such certification. I apparently presumed you are in IT or studied IT or know superficial about IT but I would suggest you to do some research about software process certification and what is ISO all about. Obviously, your knowledge about ISO is very limited.

In ISO, it is not all about documentation and file management process. Of course, they are the bits and pieces of the puzzle which will eventually guarantee the quality of the products or services.

Your analogy is very irresponsible and misleading. It is like those accessors who know nothing abot writing software.

I read your article with interest, especially regarding the notion of 'world class'.

I'm a malay and despite the so-called privileges given to us I have had many disappoinments with local education.

Without going into a lenghty discussion on what makes 'world class' education and racial undertones that go with it, I have observed various consistencies in the education system:

1. Poor planning
2. Poor strategy
3. Poor system
4. Poor implementation
5. Unable to motive students
6. Overburdening teaching staff and students
7. Lacksidal attitude
8. Policies that constantly change
9. Politics
10. Individual interests comes first
11. Resources allocated not going to those who need it
12. It's who you know that is important

I believe that first you have to succeed at home before attempting to be 'world class'.

Once I was optimistic about what people had to say about making this country 'world class' for education but I have seen the reality and I believe that what we see before us now is just a mirage, making us believe something so much that is not really there.

I am a UiTM Law Student. I might not be clever enough for some of you but I have friends in my batch who scored 8 to 10 A's in SPM and I am not talking the literary stream but the one from science stream who choose to study law in UiTM. Stop generelising by saying UiTM student tarak guna etcetera and only champion among themselve. While myself humbly excluded as I am just an average student but those friend of mind scored highly in their SPM which is a standardized exam for all Malaysian. I have friends in another University which are very much applauded by people such as UM, UTM, and while admitting that there are many clever people there, there are also many of that friends there that scored lower in SPM than this University friend of mine. but because this friend study in UM, does not make her more clever or intelligent than this University friend of mine. I am referring to SPM because many would not agree on others rank especially those fixed by respective university which people might contest to be double standard, unreliable anymore, and SPM as the best reference here as it is a standardized one.

She might be even better than some of you commenting and looking down on UiTM student (again referring to SPM's result here) just because a UiTM label is stucked on these people, including me.

this is important in order to make sure they (uitm) can compete internationally not just on paper...
or at least make sure their student have a good command in "international language" aka. English...stop make me laugh.

It is obviously NOT the intention of the writer to critisize a specific race or what.

just accept the facts that UiTM is lousy, and it had made whoever studied in it look bad.

The only way to stop racism or racial slurs is to STOP racist policies... By pointing your fingers at chinese and say that we're stereotype racists is NOT going to change anything.

If you were born a chinese, and you're denied of entries to public local uni, and if you're denied JPA scholarships even you did well in exams, and if YOu are denied insentives or help when you need it the most, You will know why Chinese are so desperate... 17. Nanyang Technological University , Singapore
18. Chinese University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong
19. Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand

it's only UiTM and UIA, local institutions that are in the list of top 20 in the world. UiTM's speaker has even be crowned few times as best speaker in the international scene. UiTM had also won few times in royal malaysia, and asian debate.

I am so disgusted by the attitude of the writers and some commenters of this blog. It is so obvious that you people are nothing more than a bunch sour grapes - criticising local U's with greater emphasis on UiTM in particular and hiding behind the name EducationMalaysia. It really is appalling. When the Government implement something to help the Malays, the Malays are automatically labeled as racists but when there are Malays looking for a job in a Chinese company get rejected because they wear headscarves or because they don't speak Mandarin, the bloody employers were never labeled as racists at all. Why?

I can say this with 100% certainty, IPTA students, UiTM included, and especially certain fields like Medic, Pharmacy, etc, are very very very good. In contrast, we have universities (IPTS)like Limkokwing (all-pass university), etc etc that put education second after monetary gains.

You don't have to go far. Just look at the syllabuses (now under OBE called CIS) and quantity and quality of the lecturers.. I can go on and on but alas, some minds are closed (ie no point of me continuing)..

I have visited faculties profile of UiTM, honestly, I do not understand what is world class means for UTM.
How many SCI, SCIE, SCOPUS,SSCI and HCI indexed journals publication they have done in recent years? I really wonder if they know all about this. They need to learn what is world class really means in education from their neighborhood country's universities such as Singapore's NUS, NTU and Taiwan's NTU,NCKU,NCTU and NCHU.

All the best Malaysia. You have a long way to go in Education.

hmm....

I took my 1st degree at other IPTA (cannot mention).

I took master degree at UiTM. I can see the different. UiTM syllabuses are very updated and suit with industry needs.

I was very easy to get better job during my master study. Many theories and assignments were taught closely related with industry (no wonder many employers are prefer to hire UiTM graduates). My bos (international bank in malaysia) personally said to me, they are prefer UiTM graduates because they are very independent and very good in problem solving (especially IT, math and management students).

i dont just give a compliment to UiTM, i did a survey and many of interviewers said the same (honest).

Thank you UiTM, now (year 2010) i'm considering to pursue phd study at UiTM in 2011 soon.

I love UiTM...

The first thing came to my mind when I read this article is this is totally Uitm Bashing.

Come on give Uitm student a break. It's not enough that you bashed their university but you also bashed the quality of the teaching hence the quality of the student?

Have you ever think about their effort that no matter where they came from they only want to be equals with other students from other university, get a job, make money and help their family. Have you ever think about that before you shortlisted them in interviews? What? Is it just because they are from lowly standard university as you claimed therefore they don't have the chance to prove themselves at all?

Your article didn't even help with anything. It didn't help the Uitm to change it policies. It didn't help to improve its quality. And sure as hell it didn't help those poor unemployed Uitm students. But what you did managed is to spread more prejudice towards Uitm students because these students are Uitm's product. And when they read about this you successfully convinced a part of their mind that they actually have less chance to succeed in life and no matter what they will always begrudgingly believe that they are not good enough.

I know it's not your intention to to do so. But get this you already did. So please. Unless what you wrote and what you reflect is something that can solve a problem and help someone to at least feel better then don't write it.

For me it doesn't matter where you learn. School, university, or even home schooled, knowledge is everywhere the same. Because knowledge comes from God and He is wise. How can you think that those who studied in UM or UKM even Oxford and Harvard got first rate knowledge while Uitm students got second rate knowledge? How can you rate knowledge when it is not yours to be given at first place?

What you wrote is the mere act of justifying what you felt and what you thought provided with some information you got from unknown resources. It does not clarify the most important thing that knowledge is everyone's right and we should be grateful that we had a chance to learn. Isn't that what universities suppose to teach no matter what ranked they were in?

And if a student from Uitm can accept that and fully understand the meaning of it, treasure the small chance they had and change their life how can you judge them the opposite? Think before you think again.

I know that it is your right that you have the power to reject any candidates not you feel not suitable and you have nothing against Uitm students. But please do so because they are not qualified enough not because they are from unranked university.

Last but not least, what you wrote somehow hurt their feelings. But they hardly know you. And they know for a fact that what you wrote is also for a political purposes. Everything is questionable. Don't you think?

So they will understand. And they will forget. Because politicians are the same. They are as good as lawyers.

The more I read the comments the more ridiculous it is. Tau tak korang ini sume POLITIK??!

Kenapa nak gaduh2?

It's not that he's a Chinese or not. Or why Malays get privileged. That's not an issue. We've been living with hak istimewa for 55 years. Yet we do not compromise on these thing because politician yg mcm ni la. Hebat bercakap tapi tgk ape die buat semua utk kepentingan diri die jugak. Politicians are all the same. They never change. Tu pun tak kan korang tak paham lg?

Semua ini hanya mainan politik semata-mata. Kita semua jgn terpedaya.

Reading the replies and comments on this page makes me feel reeeaaallllyyyy smart! At one point of the discussion, why does it suddenly became a hateful thread on race....zz.zzzzz...zzz...zzz

It really doesn't matter what uni u come from or your race if your way of thinking worse than a primary school student. No one will bash you if you fail a couple of times if you act like a leaned man/woman and matured in your way of thinking. We go to uni and study to open up our mind, not to boast that we are better than anyone else. I guess the situation can best be describe: the uni may offer everything in the world for a student, but the student can either make or break the uni though their actions.

Lets become more matured and think through before posting anything on the internet. Proud to be Malaysians and proud to be a graduate.
