My father was also the first in his family to attend university and my grandparents were manual labourers, so I've heard a lot of stories from him about his school life growing up. You're absolutely right, though, that most people of means don't really relate to the typical public school pupil, and I think that's been a major problem when it comes to debating the issue of education, since most of us aren't aware of our own blinkers.John Leehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16316489754000191267noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12123329.post-69528159175088985762008-12-31T08:22:00.000+08:002008-12-31T08:22:00.000+08:00you've had an unusual amount of exposure to public...you've had an unusual amount of exposure to public and private schools, and those in different mediums. it'll be interesting to hear what you have to say. just keep an ear open for those of us on the other side of the fence - those whose parents never went to university, who got stuffed into one school and jolly well swam or sank there, and whose only shot at education was it battle it out in the public system. at the end of the day, national policies affect people like this the most.

*end of presumptious, over-bearing lecture*

all best.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12123329.post-66955447825779217132008-12-26T17:56:00.000+08:002008-12-26T17:56:00.000+08:00The Malaysian education system is broken! I don't believe I would know that, though, even if I had continued on to study locally; most of my peers opted to take their pre-u and degree in local colleges because they had the results necessary for private scholarships, or because their parents could afford it. I could have opted for either if I wanted to, as well. I spent enough time in the system to know it was broken; I've heard and read enough to know that the parts I didn't experience are just as broken.John Leehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16316489754000191267noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12123329.post-91089427394101511592008-12-26T11:38:00.000+08:002008-12-26T11:38:00.000+08:00Congratulations on joining the team! You hardly spent a decade here and have only undergone the 'easy parts' of the education system and given up. The big fights actually happen post-SPM - the race for scholarships and university admissions. Also, while racial polarisation exists in schools, it isn't quite complete until university.

That's not to say that your educational background isn't interesting. It's just that I hope that you keep these things in mind when you pen your thoughts about the local education system - lest some people dismiss your ideas as assumptions and make belief.

Bonne chance!Shawn Tanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04342111805045331752noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12123329.post-64853181827660362512008-12-25T23:36:00.000+08:002008-12-25T23:36:00.000+08:00Heh, I'm not replacing either of them, and I would...Heh, I'm not replacing either of them, and I would be rather upset if I were.
