As far as I know, I always thought that those kind of Professorship would be honorary Professorship.

At Cornell, only those with post-doctorate are called Professor (including those Asst. Prof and Assoc. Prof), whereas those with just PhD is called Dr., and those without PhD is called lecturer.Chen Chowhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00936368584754749865noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12123329.post-1161733306706953662006-10-25T07:41:00.000+08:002006-10-25T07:41:00.000+08:00I am not sure if Pak Lah is even in full control o...I am not sure if Pak Lah is even in full control of his party memnbers. It is UMNO election time and those rise-by-any-means politicians are willing to say anything to further their own aim (this is often not the same as Malaysia's aim).

When things will change? In my opinion, the catalyst would be competitive pressure from globalisation.

Other other matters:
1. PhD means someone has written a PhD thessis and passed. There are plenty of rubbish PhD holder around.

2. Professor is a job/grade title (like Prime Minister). Hyphothetically, A standard 6 educated genius guy who won the noble price can be made professor without any issue at all.Casperhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06968066001104486355noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12123329.post-1161711295499117162006-10-25T01:34:00.000+08:002006-10-25T01:34:00.000+08:00yup, sooth is right. there are too many "professor...yup, sooth is right. there are too many "professors" who doesn't have a PhD. we shouldn't actually refer to them as professor at all.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12123329.post-1161682273248032312006-10-24T17:31:00.000+08:002006-10-24T17:31:00.000+08:00But from "what a lulu"'s link, I find it wired, wh...But from "what a lulu"'s link, I find it wired, why do would the academics carry both the titles of "professor" and "Dr."?

My guess is that it's probably because Malaysian universities, in the past, promoted many people without Phd to Professorship. One of ...Great that Tony has blogged on this issue. One of the fact that really stuns me is that there is no full professorship in UM for Economics. Datuk Rafiah should really do something on this issue, or she has already planned to take some action on it. It has to be fast and effective actions to bring UM back to the glory days.

On whether to bring back Dr. Lim, it is a debatable issue. Is Dr. Lim the best candidate to lead our Economics Dept at UM? Any other prominent candidates among Malaysians?

Do we need only 1 full professor? In my opinion, we would need more than 1, especially with the number of students that need to be taught at UM. Technically, most students, irrespective of whether they are in econs department should have a basic of at least microeconomic and macroeconomic.

Essentially, attempts to retain Dr. Lim Teck Ghee in Malaysia is crucial. It could be our IPTAs or even IPTSs which offer him to serve, but making full use of his talent would definitely benefit many Malaysians.Chen Chowhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00936368584754749865noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12123329.post-1161517595839117452006-10-22T19:46:00.000+08:002006-10-22T19:46:00.000+08:00They,the UMNO would not allowed such smart guy to ...They,the UMNO would not allowed such smart guy to exist, moreover he's a non-Malay researching on Malays.
