Girls Smarter Than Boys? (III)

As the title suggests, I've written on this topic twice (Part I and Part II) previously already. But the statistics just gets more and more interesting each year, that I thought it's definitely worth another mention.

Deputy Minister of Higher Education, Datuk Ong Tee Keat said out of the 79,337 graduates for the 2005/2006 academic session, 50,227 were females and 29,110 males in the Dewan Negara on last week. In percentage form, it means that "man"-kind only made up 36.7% of the total graduates in this country!

More interestingly, it ratio appears worse for the bumiputera community. While bumiputera only institution, Universiti Teknologi Mara produced the highest number of graduates at 25,560, women led the way with 17,151 graduates. That means only less than one-third or 32.9% of the bumiputera graduates are male!

While it's great for the women-folk, for I've always believed that education is a tool for emancipation of the fairer sex. However, what has become of men, and in particular Malay men? Have they all been Rempitized? Surely, this must be of great concern to the leaders of the society?

I am more concern about something else. Out of approximately 80K graduates, 26K are from MARA which translates into about 33%! So much of our countries' resources pooled together by all Malaysians have been channelled towards the advancement of a single "race". Is this justice? That is in addition to money allocated to the public universities of which about 60% are bumi's. MARA + Public universities produced altogether 72.5% of bumi graduates. A nice ratio of 3 to 1.

The sense of injustice arises because of the sense of discriminatory entry policy. If the admission standards has been equalized ( no more dual system of STPM and matriks) , then this doubt will not come about even if the ratio is 3 to 1.

Probably has to be great being a boy in uni then, ah all the choices. Damn I missed out.

Simple...guys think with their khrams.

Go over the PMR/SPM/STPM top scorers' list for the past umpteen years. You will find more girls than boys there, whether Arts or Science.

Thinking with our khrams is more pleasurable than using our heads!

With so many girls to boy students, I pity the male students!
They might end up not scoring well academically due to 'over worked' khrams!

who cares if men may or may not be smarter .. women are still better looking..

Anonymous said...

What's khrams?

Anonymous said...

Too bad that my course (comp sc) in my university still dominated by males. Any methods to attract more fairer sex into the course? :D

Excuse me, What is a khram? Its mentioned here frequently, and I have checked google search engine...no such thing as khram.

Anonymous said...

So why do you think there are so many Mat Rempits?

Watch Borat: Cultural learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan, for a greater understanding of khram.

Borat good big khram! :)))

girls are better than boys, boys are just LAZY!!

Anonymous said...

boys are not lazy, except that they are too tired dragging their khrams every where from lecture halls, laboratories to hostels...everyday

Girls dont have to drag any khrams, so they can study and concentrate

Anonymous said...

FYI,

Khram means male private part.......

That anonymous guy is just plain obnoxious......

Anonymous said...

It is because girls have better concentration than guys. Guys are easily distracted with all sorts of activities.

Hi,

Some time ago, I read in the BBC education section website about a study on the comparative performance of male and female students in UK. You may be able to get it from their archives. To cut it short, the conclusion was that female students are better at the first-degree level. At postgraduate level, the boys are better. They also came out with some suggestions of why this is so. Unfortunately, I have forgotten what they were! What is your guess?

Thanks to the marginalisation, near 80% of local university enrollments are from the ethnic Malay. Hmmmmmmmm. !

Pardon me to say that..

From economic point of view, oversupply could be the culprit of graduate unemployment...

Nothing personal, pure figure and economic analysis!

I think we should stop making more universities...

But we should channel some of them with less academic inclination to skills centres and polytechnics..

This would be win-win for all...Better for the nation, for the individuals and less headache for the academics in our uni..

I have seen some of the results of our undergraduate from a premier university. They barely scratched through the cgpa of 2.00 after their 1st year.. A few even fell below that..

I believe their pre-u results should have shown them that they are not university material..

Imagine that, these students can be found in our premier uni?? Which I would like compare it University of Tokyo or perhaps ANU ?

Nothing personal..
Substance is better than the form...
Win-win for all!

Let them learn something useful that can be used for starting some entrepreneural ventures...instead of regurgitating facts and figures in 3 years...for chasing after a mere piece of paper..

You expect them to stop establishing more universities? Have you heard the news that from 2007 onwards, Malaysia will have extra 6 universities, upgraded from the previously UCs. Just another publicity stunt anyway without thinking the impact. Creating all sorts of mindless rubbish to ensure their continuing control of the country.

Are you proud of being a Malaysian? Of course, we have the most number of universities and unemployed graduates! Malaysia BOLEH!!

WHERE IS HASHIM YAACOB?
ANYONE SEEN HASHIM YAACOB?

Anonymous said...

hmmm, if this trend keeps continuing on, will there be any affirmative action to help boys to go to university/college or not?

Anonymous said...

Dear Michelle,
I'd support the affirmative action you mentioned in order to help boys get into the universities, as long as no racial and religious quotas come into play. It's far more better than the current policy which discriminates certain groups solely on the basis of 'not the same kind'. :)

Anonymous said...

I dont mind the girls are smarter or make up the dominant populations in campuses

They are beautiful, nice and tasty!!!

One interesting side issue came up from this blog and comments:

When quota is set based on gender, it is called affirmative action. But when it is based on race or religion it is called discrimination. What gives? Pick and choose whatever suits you?

Anonymous said...

but when a man says he prefer giving employment to ladies, he is called 'gatal'

So difficult to live in this world

I came across something interesting on the web, which after reading, I now kinda understand why gals are perceived to be smarter than boys..

..quote unquote..

At a hospital the relatives gathered in the waiting room, where a family member lay gravely ill. Finally, the doctor came in looking tired and serious.

Surveying the worried faces, the doctor said, "I'm afraid I'm the bearer of bad news. The only hope left for your loved one at this time is a brain transplant. It's an experimental procedure, very risky, you will have to pay for the brain yourselves."

The family members sat silent as they absorbed the news. After a great length of time, someone asked, "Well, how much does a brain cost?"

The doctor quickly responded, "$5,000 for a male brain, and $200 for a female brain."

The moment turned awkward. Men in the room tried not to smile; avoiding eye contact with the women, but some actually smirked. One man, unable to control his curiosity, blurted out the question everyone wanted to ask, "Why is the male brain so much more expensive?"

The doctor smiled at the childish innocence and said to the entire group, "It's just standard pricing procedure. We have to mark down the price of the female brains, because they've been used."

HAPPY NEW YEAR, EVERYONE :)
