4 Malaysians accepted by MIT

At the risk of sounding like an elitist, I was recently informed by Andrew Loh that 4 Malaysians got into MIT for the next academic year, fall of 2007 or Class of 2011. Congrats to Sugasini (BNM scholar), the humble Ashley, the kiasu Tung Shen who's already frantically downloading his courses for the fall semester (are you sure you didn't study in Singapore?) and Wei Jian, the Math genius who's currently studying in Singapore. I'm sure you guys will have a great time at MIT figuring out how to put firetrucks on top of buildings! But seriously, it is indeed rare for 4 Malaysians to get into MIT in one year. Hopefully, these fellas won't have set the bar too high for other Malaysians to get into MIT in the future!

  2. The great news of 4 Malaysians getting into MIT this year have been spreading around. It has been a long time since we had 4 Malaysians getting into MIT in a year (Hope I didn't get my fact wrong).

Congrats to all 4 of them! Wun Min (Ashley), Sugasini, Tung Shen and Wei Jian!

The news of 4 of them getting into MIT has also helped a bunch of us who are working on Discover U.S. Education - KL '07 (http://www.discoverUSeducation.org) to feel very happy. At least, we know that Sugasini and Wun Min were at Experiences 2006 Kuala Lumpur (old name of Discover U.S. Education - KL '07) and they benefitted greatly from it. Tony was one of the speakers in that event too last year!

Sugasini was describing to me excitedly that it was the best education fair that she had attended and she had benefitted from it. She even requested to join the committee and she would be helping out in the PR committee!

Wun Min has joined the committee a few months back, holding the post as Head of Sponsorship!

Congrats to all 4 of them! I believe there is a MIT Admission Talk on 14th April 10:30am at Royal Selangor Golf Club.

  4. Heartiest congratulations to the four Malaysians who managed to enter MIT. Not easy at all to enter MIT, considering the fierce competition from candidates around the world.

Hope this news is made known to all young Malaysians and also hope those who managed to enter MIT will share their application process experiences with others through the Internet, so that there is a multiplier effect - more Malaysians to enter MIT and Ivy League universities in the coming years.

  5. Congrats to all who got in. It is indeed a tremendous achievement for our country to see four Malaysians enter MIT in one year alone. It is very disheartening that our newspapers are content to play up the exploits of Mat Rempit in the Arctic, while they virtually ignore achievements of true substance such as this.

If I'm not mistaken, the Ivy League universities will be releasing their admissions results in less than a week, so let's cross our fingers for more good news. :D

  6. In the recently announceed Singapore's A-level examination results, a number of Malaysians who studied in various JCs did very well with full As in their A-level papers and distinctions in their S-papers.

Many of them were Asean scholars. Some have managed to secure full scholarships from various agencies, including Singaporean agencies like GIC, to do their undergraduate degrees at universities in the UK and US.

They should share their experiences through the Internet to encourage young Malaysians to explore alternative financial aids to test their mental and physical capabilities and to fulfil their dreams.

Do not let the negative forces in Malaysia to break the spirits and crush the dreams of our talented youths who happen to come from financially disadvantaged families.

Let no child be denied their full potential because of any human-created obstacles, e.g., based on racial, religious, or skin-colour bias.

  9. Congratulations! I hope you guys get to migrate to the USA. My hopes are that Sugasini would be released from her 10 year shackle of being bonded to BNM.

John, according to Suga the Harvard is releasing its admission results. I'm also sick of the newspapers publishing non-news.

  10. Migrate to USA and break bond?

Wow, That's the Number 1 way to celebrate our country's 50 years of independence.

    Pathetic.

A scholarship is a marriage. Not some prostitute that you f*** and leave once you get the pleasure you desire.

What a pathetic comment you left there.Congratulations.

  11. Is there any statistics on the number of Malaysian students in Junior College,Singapore and MIT according to race?

P.S:I read some childish comments from anonymous. Please remove them and banned the IP,if possible

  12. You should be able to find the exact number of Malaysians in MIT but not Singapore JCs. One is available on request, the other, not that direct.

  13. Ashley & Tung Shen are admitted to MIT class of 2011. Does that mean they are queued up for 4 years before they can set foot in MIT? WOW, 4 years to wait!!!

  14. dude, class of 2011 means graduating in 2011.

No need to wait for 4 years, just as we are waiting for our buses.

  15. it's just 4 msians! nothing big.. unless they actually got a scholarship for it.

wonder what's with the "kiasuism" attitude of us msians going goo-goo gah gah when someone enters an ivy league.

truly it's an achievement, but at the end of the day.. a good education in my opinion doesn't necessarily have to come from any top universities.. i mean getting admitted into ivy leagues are like a dream come true for a lot of people, but there's so much more in education.. it's about the genuine friendships we develop, the laughter, the golden moments etc.

so yeah, that's what i think.. nothing big if u get into those ivy leagues.. damn, we msians just gotta get a grip.

  16. Congratulations to those who were admitted to MIT. It is a fantastic place to get an education.

In response to anonymous of 3/29/2007 03:46:00 PM, it doesn't matter whether or not they were given scholarships as MIT has need blind admissions, i.e. if they accept you and you cannot afford to pay for it, they will give you financial aid in the form of grants and a small amount of loans to cover your costs (tuition, living expenses, even one ticket to your home country in the middle of your duration of study).

I do agree with you that one can get a good education outside the so-called "elite" universities.

I strongly encourage the admitted students to try getting financial aid from MIT instead of scholarships from Malaysian organizations that tie you down for many years. You can always go back to work at those very organizations when you graduate anyway. Elite schools like Harvard and MIT are EXTREMELY GENEROUS with financial aid as their aim is to get the best students in the world, no matter what their economic background.
