What After SPM?

A plug for what I think is a really really great project spearheaded by a few young Malaysians - Chong Yong Wei Gabrielle, Goh Jing Pei, Kimberley Mei Kay, Tara Thean, Charis Loke - and project advisor Chen Chow (sorry Chen Chow, can't really call you young anymore). The aim of this project is to collect stories of 'young Malaysians who have pursued different pathways after SPM'. You can find out more details about the project here. I especially like this paragraph from the link above:

It does not matter whether you are a scholar with stellar results and a 3-inch thick resume, a typical student who went to a local university after finishing Form 6, or a youth who has to work in the pasar malam at night to foot your technical college fees in the day. It does not matter whether you have chosen the oft-beaten path or the road less travelled. We believe that there every education background offers its own boons and banes. And we believe that there are merits in telling any story.

Just got wind from Universiti Malaya that they needed to see my publications after rejecting my application to be lecturer two weeks ago. First they insult me during the interview, then reject me, then get my name wrong and now ask me for my publications. Their mannerisms never ceases to amaze me!

the mentality among these people is that "you are begging for a steel rice bowl, so regardless of what qualifications you've got, insults are unavoidable"

Kian Ming, thanks for the plug. Hope that the readers of EducationMalaysia could help us to spread the words around and also submit your experience, to share with the younger generation!

p/s: Kian Ming, both of us are still young at heart. :)

Chen Chow, young is relative. It all depends whom you compare yourslef to. As lont as we compare ourselves to Kian Ming, we will always be young. ;-)

How about this after SPM...go to the street and become DVD salesmen, a capitalist footsoldiers or grunts and then see if you could climb your way on the corporate ladder.

All young Malaysians after SPM harus "dikapitalist dan dikoproratkan" for the ultimate showdown Malaysian's 13th General Election.

For this book, the hope is to capture as wide the options as possible.. You guys highlighted a few of the options, and we want those sharing of experience, and hopefully, we can get as wide the spectrum as possible.

As of now, we have gotten 9 submissions already and they are pretty diverse.

Some of you might be saying that you have very "normal" life. What we are looking for is one segment of your life that is "unique" and "diverse". It could be for your hobby, passion, interest, career, education, special programs, charity etc.

It is not about your entire lifestory, but a small part of it, and if we add up 100 of those, it became 100 possibilities.

A conversation between a man and a boy (SPM leaver)..

Man: Boy,What is the secret of building an empire?

Boy: Becomes a banker and gets government hand-out.

Man: No.That is for corporate crooks.

Boy: Money?Guns? Both?

Man: You are very wise, boy.

Capitalism at its finest.
You just gotta love em....

"Cita-cita saya ialah menjadi banker-kapitalist...."

Many students leave school without much guidance at all. More so for those who drop off.

Books like what you are suggesting will be useful guides and motivation. The trick would be in how to get these guys to read them.

Best regards
