Raja Nazrin on national unity

Kudos to the CPPS and the Bar Council’s National Young Lawyers’ Committee for organizing a highlight successful Young Malaysians Roundtable Discussion on National Unity & Development. The event's highlight was most certainly Raja Nazrin's opening remarks which were progressive, insightful and balanced. I encouraged our readers to read the full text which can be accessed here. Raja Nazrin's remarks elicited a flood of positive responses as evidenced by Azmi Sharom's column here and other reactions here. For the full text of the concensus document arising from the roundtable, click here. Hopefully, this even is not just a one-off but will be sustained by future roundtables which can be conducted in innovative ways to bring people to discuss national unity issues in greater depth.

KM, to me this is just another publicity advertisement by the government. Something free of charge from NGOs. Of course we can say whatever we want, but it is not our decision, not even a slight influence to change the course of the boat.

I am just trying to be realistic, especially when you live in Malaysia for some time. After 50 years, what do we have? How many cries have been directed at the ruling government for decades? Any of them ever being carried out? NONE. Whether it is about abolishing NEP or upholding the Constitution, none has been implemented according to the voice of the public. Is this really a government by the people and for the people?

Anyone that went against them will be labeled "trying to create uneasiness among the people." Whether it is the 9 cabinet ministers or Lim Kit Siang, all has been labeled accordingly.

UMNO has been saying for ages that they need to protect the interest of Melayu. I would say those are just excuses because they clearly see the benefit from such policies - money. Such policy only benefited those in power, thus creating a so called ultra-Melayu, while a large propotion of Melayu still live in poverty.

Are Melayu really that useless and stupid that can be manipulated by the ultras? Do they really need baby-sitter to milk them? I don't think so. But thanks to the propaganda by the government, whether through education or during their Friday prayers, Melayu think they need NEP. And they need it forever.

Following the proposition, UMNO will be able to maintain their power, as long as NEP is a hot topic. By maintaining NEP, UMNO is actually maintaining Melayuness. This i would say, a very strategic policy. Kudos to UMNO.

MCA also mentioned that they always care about the people, not just during election. Have we forgotten TheStar is MCA's? Is it true that they always have the people's benefit in mind? I will let you think about it.

In a nutshell, everything that is going on in Malaysia is something created by the government and for a reason. It is not easy to identify them because it has became part of our life and we do not care. Similar to Singapore, where their citizens are apolitical. BN is a very strategic alliance to steal from the people.

Eventhough the speech makes sense, however I think it is just a nice-to-hear statement that no one will translate it into actions.

A simple questiong for Raja Nazrin: Are you ready to give up your position as part of the royal family and fight for a full republic instead of the current type? Prove what you say, then the people will believe. Else, please don't anyhow bark.

There are a lot of chinese who lives below poverty line in Malaysia. While our friend here can lambast the malays and fled to Australia, but I think his comments is kind of irresponsible towards his peers. I just want to make a point here that not all chinese think like our friend here.

I can only speak for myself. What I really hope is that all the people in Malaysia, i.e. Malay, Chinese, Indian and other races share equal opportunity and be sucessful together. Privilege and subsidy should be given to people who need them regardless of skin color.
